Mindfulness and Compassion
Just as our compassionate heart can be touched by the sorrows of the world, we must also remember that it is not our responsibility to fix all the brokenness of the world—only to fix what we can. Otherwise we become grandiose, as if we were put here to be the savior of the humanity around us.
Mindfulness and compassion are genuinely undertaken one step at a time, one person, one moment. Without this understanding we become overwhelmed by all the problems that must be attended to: the dilemmas of our extended family and community, the injustice and suffering worldwide.
Compassion is most real in the particulars, in our response to the immediacy of this moment. Every conscious act contributes to the healing of the whole. Small acts can be important, as seen in the story of a man who was walking along a beach after an unusually strong spring storm. The beach was covered with dying starfish tossed up by the waves, and the man was tossing them back in the water one by one. A visitor saw this and came up to him. “What are you doing?” “I’m trying to help these starfish,” the man replied. “But there are tens of thousands of them washed up along these beaches. Throwing a handful back doesn’t matter,” protested the visitor. “Matters to this one,” the man replied as he tossed another starfish into the ocean.
To serve in this way, we must remember one more essential truth—it is never too late to begin. When we see with wisdom, the heavy press of time, the responsibility for all things is transformed. We find perspective, a long view. We are not in charge. In our relationships, in our community, on this earth, we may not live to see all the changes we work for—we are the planters of seeds. When the seeds of our actions are caring and sincere, we can know that they will bear nourishing fruit for all beings. No matter what has passed, we can begin again. We can only begin now, where we are, and it is this now that becomes the seed for all that lies ahead. Our responsibility, our creativity is all that is asked. With such sincere motivation, we will naturally ask wise questions and offer true care, tending what we love with a far-reaching wisdom. This is the long-term tending of a farmer for his orchard, a parent for a child. This broad perspective is that of the elder, the sage. It grows naturally out of a committed life of spiritual dedication.
Whether it is our ailing next-door neighbor or the building of a worldwide campaign to address climate change, each day, each step is like breathing, a practice of expanding the heart. In these small steps our truth can blossom.

Leader vs. Manager: Who Are They?
Knowing the difference between a leader vs. a manager will help you become a better motivator, business owner, teacher, trainer, coach, parent – even a better spouse.
When you show up in the world as a leader, people will naturally be more inclined to listen to you, follow your advice, and strive to do their best.
They won’t do what you ask or advise simply because they feel they “have to” – they’ll do it because they know it’s the right thing to do.
But when you focus only on managing people, as opposed to leading and inspiring them, you run the risk of becoming a micro-manager and robbing your team of their full agency and potential to rise.
So, what’s the difference between leading vs. managing?
Let’s start by considering the question: what does a leader do vs. what does a manager do? What are the roles of each and what kind of impact do they make on those around them?
Let’s take a closer look.
What Does a Leader Do?
A leader isn’t defined by their role or position in an organization or business. A person can be a c-level executive and still be an absolutely terrible leader, while the newest hire in the mailroom may already be improving productivity and morale and inspiring others to do their best.
Leaders aren’t defined by what they are but rather by who they are and how they impact the world around them.
Leaders don’t compel grudging obedience – they attract devoted followers. Their personality, charisma, and vision draw people toward them and inspire them to do what they can to make the leader’s vision a reality.
That’s where the power and impact of a leader comes in. Leaders get people excited about their work and are passionately invested in achieving the vision of the organization. And the best leaders do this by giving people a sense of ownership in what the organization is trying to achieve.
Instead of making declarative statements of how things will be done, leaders ask for your input then provide a compelling vision that others are eager to get behind because they see their own ideas and input reflected in it. As a result, they feel more ownership and connection to the organization’s success.
Leaders understand that the key to becoming a leader worth following is to focus on the success of others and doing everything they can to empower their team and achieve their goals.
They earn respect and loyalty not by demanding it but by inspiring others to trust and believe in them – as well as in themselves.
What Do Managers Do?
A manager is someone in an organization who is responsible for a team or department.
Managers oversee the day-to-day operations – planning, organizing, and directing the performance and results of their team. Their position within the organization is clearly defined and has specific duties associated with it.
A manager’s purpose is to focus on achieving the goals and objectives of the organization by making sure the team is productive and successful at performing the tasks assigned to them.
The extent to which a manager is a good leader will determine how effective the manager is at boosting employee engagement and creating a culture of success.
Qualities of a Leader vs. Manager
How can you tell if someone is a leader vs. manager?
Leaders are people who never have to raise their voices to be heard. When they speak, people automatically listen – not because they have to or simply want to.
Managers are often awarded their positions in the organization because they have specific technical skills, knowledge, and expertise in a given field or industry. But this doesn’t necessarily mean they have what it takes to influence and inspire people on their team.
Leaders know how to motivate others to do and achieve more — not by instilling fear but by helping them discover their true potential.
Leaders have a clear vision of what they want to achieve and create. They know exactly where they stand and where they want to go and are skilled at inspiring others to assist them in bringing that vision to life. They are unruffled by daily ups and downs and keep their gaze focused on long-term results.
Leaders also tend to be positive people who focus on solutions instead of problems.
What does a leader do when faced with challenges? They embrace it because they know every obstacle is an opportunity to learn.
Leaders understand that inspired collaboration is the key to success and create a workplace culture where everyone feels comfortable contributing their thoughts and ideas.
They also value out-of-the-box thinking and are constantly challenging themselves and others to aim higher and do their best.
Thanks to their higher-than-average rates of emotional intelligence, leaders are empathetic to the needs and goals of their employees. They hold themselves and others accountable for their actions and value honesty and integrity above all other qualities.
The goal of a manager is to execute the vision of a company.
Managers have a specific set of goals and objectives they must achieve and it is their responsibility to instruct their team and ensure that all members work productively to achieve those goals and objectives.
Another leader vs. manager difference is that while leaders are the people who create culture, managers are the ones who support and perpetuate that culture.
They look after the people on their team and make sure all individuals have the resources and support they need to do a great job.
Good managers often tend to be analytical problem solvers who are always looking for ways to improve performance. They create new processes and establish rules and standards that are designed to help things run more smoothly and efficiently.
Because a manager’s job often involves putting out fires that arise on a daily basis, they tend to focus more on the short-term than on the long-term vision of the organization.
Leadership and Management Similarities
Although the role and qualities of a leader vs a manager might be different within an organization, they share many important similarities as well.
For example, both leaders and managers require excellent communication skills. Knowing how to communicate effectively with others is crucial for anyone who wants to motivate people to do their best.
However, leaders tend to be more inspiring in the way they communicate and encourage people to buy into their vision. Whereas managers (good ones, at least) tend to focus on empowering people and give them what they need to do their job to the best of their abilities.
Leaders and managers also both need to be adept at crisis management, problem-solving, and decision-making.
To succeed in the face of unexpected challenges, they must be able to adapt to a changing world and work collaboratively with others to overcome obstacles that appear on their path.
That’s how to be an effective leader and manager no matter what kind of organization or industry you work in.
Defining Your Role as a Leader vs Manager
To determine whether you want to be a leader vs. manager, consider your life purpose and the path you’ll need to take in order to achieve your goals and dreams.
If you are — or want to become — a successful entrepreneur or business owner, it’s a good idea to focus on developing the skills required of a good leader.
One way to do this is to learn how to coach people to be their best. Deliver feedback effectively so they can overcome their limitations and get better results in everything they do.
If, on the other hand, you want to focus on the analytical and process-based side of overseeing a team, developing your skills as a manager is the way to go.
Either way, you must know how to set and achieve goals for yourself and teach others how to do the same.
And the more you develop strong leadership skills on top of your management skills, the more effective you will be as a manager and team leader.
At the end of the day, learning how to be a good leader may seem harder for you to achieve but it will ultimately bring you more success and fulfillment in the long run.

25 Aug Questions to Ask Before Entering a Gym Being Visually Impaired
So, you have just decided you want to join a gym.
Whether you are new to exercise or looking to get back into exercise, stepping inside a gym can be intimidating.
If you’re not a regular at the gym, getting started can be your biggest obstacle — especially if you’re someone who has difficulty with their vision.
It’s been found that people with a visual impairment are twice as likely to be inactive and exhibit lower levels of fitness than their sighted peers. This comes as no surprise considering they face the same challenges most of us do (motivation, routine, confidence), but with the added barrier of sight.
However, over the years, more and more people who have difficulty with their vision are becoming increasingly confident in participating in physical activity and sport.
But like all new experiences, you shouldn’t jump straight in without asking a few questions.
Ask a coach
Exercise Right spoke with Accredited Exercise Scientist and owner of Foresight Fitness, Mitchell Finn.
Mitch has worked with numerous sport organisations and has faced his own vision impairment challenges. These impairments haven’t stopped him pursuing his own health and fitness goals.
Exercise Right asked Mitch what someone with a vision impairment should consider before entering the gym and what to ask a coach.
THINGS TO ASK YOUR COACH BEFORE ENTERING THE GYM IF YOU ARE VISUALLY IMPAIRED
What are the most common mistakes you see when beginners enter the gym?
Beginners with difficulty seeing often face the challenge of not only trying to get fitter and stronger, but learning a whole new way to move.
For those who are visually impaired, not being able to see and understand these movements from a young age may mean they have even less understanding as to what is required in a squat or push-up than the average trainee. Give yourself more time than your peers to pick up tricky movement patterns.
The other major issue you may want to address when entering the gym with a visual impairment is your posture.
Those with difficulty with their vision are always having to move their heads, neck and back to get a ‘closer’ look on things. This results in more tightness in the postural muscles and it can throw a spanner in the works during more complex movements like the deadlift.
You should talk to a coach about making changes inside and outside the gym to improve your posture.
What should you consider before seeing a coach?
Have a think about some of your perceived barriers to physical activity, whether they be related to your vision or not, and discuss these with your coach within the first few sessions.
This will allow you to make a plan to overcome these challenges so that they have as little impact on your training as possible. A good coach will go the extra mile and do some research or ask around if they don’t know how to work around what you have discussed with them!
Consider some of the more tangible aspects to training such as the style of training you like, the accessibility of the gym space, and whether you would like 1 on 1 or group training to start your journey.
The obvious extra attention you get during 1 on 1 training means there is less going on around you in terms of visual stimuli, meaning you have more energy to focus on your training.
With the right tools and techniques, plus a healthy dosage of motivation, the benefits of exercise are well within reach for people with a visual impairment.

1. How busy does the gym get and what times should I train?
2. Does the layout of the equipment that I will be using change?
3. Are there any sections of the gym that are hard to navigate?
4. I have previously worked with some other allied health professionals who now understand my limitations well, will you find out more from them?
5. Have you trained anyone with a visual impairment before? What have you found helped them?

Do you spend hours sitting at a desk? Thinking of switching your office chair for a fitball? Well, there’s a few things you should consider before making the switch.
Many people are opting to sit on a ball while at their desk, on the premise it’s better for them. This may be the case, but there are several factors that you need to think about to avoid injury or risk making your posture worse. Here’s how to make sure you’re doing the right thing for your body…
Checklist for purchasing a fitball
Make sure it’s burst resistant
This will ensure if the ball gets a puncture in it, it will deflate slowly enough that you have time to get off it and don’t end up on the floor unexpectedly.
Make sure it’s the right material
The material should be heavy-duty enough that when you have pumped the ball to its correct size, it will not depress or flatten out more than one to five centimetres, when you sit on it.
Find the right size fitball
To choose a ball that is the right size for you, your hips should be 2-3 centimetres higher than your knees when you are sitting on the ball.
Once you have purchased the correct size and type of ball, you should inflate it to ninety-to-ninety five percent of its recommended size. A good quality ball will maintain its spherical shape and small base of support with load on it.
How to sit on a fitball correctly
When sitting on the ball, you need to ensure you are sitting towards the top and slightly toward the back of the ball. This will help you to adjust the position of your pelvis, simply by tilting it slightly, to ensure your pelvis, and therefore your spine, are in correct alignment.
To tilt your pelvis: simply roll the ball under you forwards and backwards until you have found that ideal position for your pelvis to be in neutral. The movement will not need to be much. Once your pelvis is in neutral, your spine has a much better chance of staying in neutral; it will be much easier to sit upright through the entire length of your spine. This leads to many benefits including: enhanced posture, improved ability to get more oxygen in, subtle activation of the pelvic floor muscles, reduced risk of pain in the shoulders, neck and back.
Make the change gradually
When you plan to sit on a ball for work, be aware that your neuromuscular system is working all the time to help you stay upright and balanced. This can be very fatiguing on your nervous system. Therefore, it is recommended to “introduce” your body to this activity before you go head-long into sitting all day on the ball.
Try to sit for an hour on the ball, then move back to your usual chair for an hour. Then move back to the ball again. Once you have done this for a few days, try increasing the duration of sit-time on the ball by fifteen minutes and reducing the sit time on the chair by fifteen minutes. Gradually increase the sit time on the ball each week and reduce the sit time on the chair until you can sit on the ball for the entire duration.
A fitball doesn’t guarantee good posture
It’s important to consider that sitting on a ball does not guarantee that you sit upright. It is possible to slouch when sitting on a ball. If you do slouch, the only real benefit you are gaining is the subtle activation of your pelvic floor muscles. Your spine is no better off than sitting on a solid, stable surface.

Words are powerful, and your conscious use of words makes a huge difference in seeing results. But the real secret to making affirmations work in Love and relationships is in the beliefs you cultivate and grow.
The reason why affirmations work (and how to make them work quickly and effectively) is in the beliefs you have about yourself. If you don’t actively and consciously work to change your beliefs, you are not using affirmations effectively.
A daily practice of affirmations works because they bring your beliefs into alignment with Love to shift your self-concept. When you operate from a place of worthiness and confidence, everything changes.

The secret sauce of affirmations
When it comes to your thoughts, are you aware of them? That may seem like a silly question, but there are subtle, subconscious thoughts you have lingering in the soil of your mind garden. These little thoughts actually dictate much of your life.
This is the power of your subconscious mind.
If you have perpetual doubts, worries, frustrations, fears, anxieties, and the like…you have a program playing inside yourself behind the scenes that need to be addressed.
The best, most efficient, and easiest way I’ve found to change your subconscious programming is to change your inner dialogue. And one of the most effective methods to rewire your subconscious mind is with affirmations.
If you’ve used affirmations before and then stopped, what was the result of stopping? I can tell you the results I’ve experienced from having a regular affirmation practice and then stopping.
Last year I got on a hot streak. I’d been doing affirmations for two years solid. And I had recently ramped up including business stuff with my morning affirmations.
Then my business picked up and I was serving more clients than ever before. I had done some great speaking gigs and taught many people about self-Love to produce healthy relationships and success.
Yay, affirmation success! Things were going really really well for me.
And I thought that all the affirmations had done their job. I decided that I didn’t need to do it anymore since things had shifted and were looking so good for me. So I stopped doing daily affirmations.
It took about three weeks, but I found myself sliding back into old thoughts and beliefs. And things began to shift in the opposite direction.

The old story of rejection started to play again
My old story of rejection started to come back again in my subtle thoughts. I hadn’t completely reprogrammed my subconscious mind to take on the new beliefs. Or as Neville Goddard teaches, I hadn’t persisted long enough and consistently enough for it to harden into fact.
I wasn’t doing anything to really persist in my new story because I’d stopped affirming myself daily. That’s the key right there to how to make affirmations powerful and effective: you have to commit to yourself to do this daily and consistently.
Getting out of this daily habit began to have some noticeable effects. My business started to go down. It was harder and harder to get in front of people for coaching, speaking, and even sharing my Be Solid book with.
All that I’d been working for and started to see changes in, suddenly wasn’t working.
When I finally woke up to what was happening, I got back on my affirmation wagon. My confidence, direction, and inner peace grew. And things began to improve in my business too.
What’s the real secret to an effective affirmation practice?
There are two main ways to do affirmations and make them a regular part of your daily routine. This is a simple and easy practice you can do today to immediately bring changes to your mindset. And impact your heart and spirit too.
First, write your affirmations down.
Then, read them to yourself. Out loud.
In doing affirmations this way, you’re telling your mind and body, “This is who I am and this is how it is.”
Second, surrender this to the universe (connecting with the spiritual part of you) so that what you’ve written, spoken, and affirmed becomes your new state of being.
You can incorporate simple affirmations into your daily meditation practice to get these beliefs deeper into your subconscious mind too.
Another key way to use affirmations is to record yourself saying them and looping this recording for a few hours.
Listen to these recordings while you sleep, when your subconscious mind is most open to receiving information. I recommend a few folks like Michael Sealey, Dauchsy, and Dylan James’ work on Youtube for great affirmation recordings to use while you sleep.
Some affirmations that work wonders
Here are a few of the affirmations I’ve used to completely change my life. The first three have been instrumental in healing from heartbreak and overcoming life-long codependency.
- “I am Love.”
- “I believe in me.”
- “It is easy to attract Love into my life.”
- “I am strong.”
- “I Love myself exactly as I am.”
- “My dreams are coming true.”

Affirmations are self-Love put into practice
Affirming to yourself is simply changing your inner story. This changes your subconscious thoughts and patterns which leads you to naturally taking attracting the Loving relationships you want in your life.
Neville Goddard teaches that “Everyone and everything is you pushed out.” What this means is that your inner core beliefs determine your experiences in life. This is particularly true in your relationships.
If you want to attract a truly Loving, committed, and healthy relationship, you have to change your self-concept. Affirmations are how you embody the attributes of the person you desire to attract by becoming the person you want to attract.
You step into the characteristics and qualities of Love to attract Love into your life. This also applies to all of your relationships from family to friends to business/career.
Change your beliefs about who you are. See yourself as worthy, whole, attractive, and magnetic to all you desire. Be the Love you want to experience and you will find that this becomes your reality.
