Resolutions made in response to emotional triggers are often short-lived.

If you wish to be able carry out your resolutions, you need to think well of them, before making them, and then back them up with willpower and determination.

Emotional Resolutions Do not Last Long

Making resolutions, such as New Year resolutions, is often an emotional act. These kinds of resolutions might be approached with enthusiasm at the beginning, but then neglected.

These resolutions have nothing to do with willpower, decisiveness and inner strength. They are made emotionally, without thinking and deliberation, and therefore, lack power and do not last long.

Sometimes, a sudden desire arises in us to do something, change our behavior, or achieve a certain goal. This desire arises in response to certain situations or events, and is not something we thought about deliberately.

Sometimes, we might even start enthusiastically working on those. However, the problem is that after a while, the emotions calm down, and we quit what we have started. Why might lose our desire and enthusiasm, or we might discover that we lack enough inner power and strength to continue.

We often make resolutions and promises, and then try to change our behavior accordingly. We might begin to study, look for a job or seek a life partner. We might start acting according to our resolutions, but this goes on only for a short while.

We start with much noise, but end in silence. We make resolutions enthusiastically and optimistically, but then we lose our enthusiasm and stop doing what we promised ourselves to do.

This kind of behavior shows lack of willpower and discipline, and makes us lose faith in our ability to follow our resolutions and promises. This might lead us to believe that willpower is just a myth, an unreal thing.

This is an erroneous idea, because no real willpower was involved in making these resolutions.

As said earlier, most of the resolutions we make are triggered by emotions. We make them in response to some strong emotion or thought, and rarely because of deliberation, thinking and common sense.

The driving powers of our resolutions are often feelings and emotions, but feelings and emotions are not stable and not constant. One moment you might feel you can conquer the world, and a moment later you feel weak, lazy and lacking motivation.

Avoid Making Emotional Resolutions

A resolution made on the spur of the moment is usually useless.

The emotion that triggered the resolution might disappear a short while later, and there will be no desire left to carry on the resolution.

Another important point to mention is that subconscious habits are stronger than any resolution, and they usually overcome any decision and desire for change.

All this might lead you to believe that you lack willpower and backbone, but you can strengthen these, like any other skill.

If you could not carry out your decisions, it means that you did not use any willpower or self-discipline.

Willpower is real, not an illusion.

Your resolutions, as said, earlier, did not involve any willpower, but only temporary and fleeting emotions and desires.

You cannot expect a physically weak person to lift heavy weight, but if he or she train themselves regularly, they would get stronger. It is the same with the strengthening of the power of the will.

Why Willpower Is Essential for Making Resolutions?

Real willpower is not dependent on feelings, emotions or temporary enthusiasm. This makes this skill strong, stable and dependable.

1. Willpower turns into a habit
Willpower is an ability that is developed over a period of time, and can turn into a habit. After developing it, you will be able to use it whenever and wherever required.

2. Self-discipline
Strengthening your willpower also strengthens your self-discipline, which is another important component, necessary for making resolutions and following them through, without stopping, until you accomplish them.

3. Concentration, perseverance, assertiveness, self-confidence
As a byproduct of strengthening your willpower and self-discipline, you also improve your concentration, perseverance, assertiveness, self-confidence.

4. Balanced and calm mental attitude
Willpower enables you to make decisions with a balanced and calm mental attitude, and carry them out until their successful accomplishment.

5. A power that is always available
Constant training of your willpower results in attaining a real power, which is always available to you. Then, you will be able to make real and lasting resolutions, and follow them through.

6. You do not quit what you start doing
With strong willpower, you will not quit what you start doing, and therefore, you would save yourself disappointments. This would contribute to a feeling happiness and satisfaction.

Real willpower is like a master key, which you can use to open the doors leading to fulfillment and achievement.

If you are willing and ready to devote the necessary time to develop and strengthen your willpower, you will be highly rewarded. How far you will go in developing this important ability depends on how much time, effort and earnestness you are willing to invest.

Nowadays, people want immediate results, and lack patience and perseverance. However, every achievement in life, and every skill requires patience and perseverance.

For the millions of us affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the sudden shift to working from home has brought a lot of stress and anxiety. We could all benefit from taking a breather.

Plenty of us dream of winding down by camping in the woods or just relaxing by the river with friends or family for a day.

Wet Wipes are Your Friend

Depending on where you set camp, running water may be hard to come by (or God forbid, polluted when you arrive). You should have packed a couple of gallons before leaving, but you have to prioritize that for eating and drinking.

You want to be prepared with a lot of wet wipes. Most wet wipes in the market are anti-bacterial and are good enough for a pat down after a long day. Be sure they are safe to be used on skin, though as some are strictly made for hard surfaces.

If you are used to cleaning up with water after number 2 and happen to have toilet access, DUDE flushable wipes are a great alternative that won’t clog up septic tanks.

However, keep in mind that wet wipes are NOT biodegradable and you must dispose of them responsibly! Take them home if you can’t appropriate garbage bins.

Pack the Right Clothes

Cotton t-shirts are great when you’re at home watching Netflix. But if you’re out and about in hot and muggy weather as the summer approaches, you want to wear something that would be more appropriate for sports.

Synthetic fabrics such as nylon and polyester are sweat-wicking, meaning that it draws sweat away from your body and keeps you dry. They also tend to have a lot of ventilation holes and keep your body feeling cool.

These materials dry very quickly after a quick wash and don’t get smelly as easily as cotton does.

Since you’ll be on your feet a lot, get socks that are sweat-wicking too! Cotton socks are notorious for causing blisters as moisture builds up and aggravates friction. Also, damp and dark areas are a recipe for bacteria to grow.

Rinse-Free Facial Cleanser (and Body Wash)

Feeling fresh starts with your face in the morning. While we have the luxury of splashing cold water on our face at home, this might not be the case when you are far away from civilization.

A great option for you would be to pack along a rinse-free facial cleanser.

That’s right, you just need to apply the product the same way you would with a regular cleanser, except that you would wipe it down instead of washing it away, saving you a lot of water.

Be sure to start off with clean hands, though.

I would look for a place to shower where possible. But it isn’t an option for some, so I recommend buying rinse-free body wash as well. These aren’t only popular for travelers, but they are also used in giving bedridden patients in the healthcare sector their daily baths.

If it works for them, it should work for you too!

Foot Scrub

You weren’t expecting this, but don’t underestimate the value of clean, fresh feet! If you’ve been exploring the trails, you’re on your feet for hours at a time.

Bacteria grow like mushrooms in that sweaty environment and cause your feet to smell bad. They feed on the dead skin and oil that builds up over time.

While anti-bacterial socks help, a good scrubbing is the perfect solution for this problem as you’re essentially scraping away their source of food.

Simplify Laundry

If you’re going away for a while, doing some laundry on-the-go would be a viable option if you hate the idea of lugging around a week’s worth of clothes.

All you need is a trash bag, water, and soap or detergent (get the environmentally-friendly option).

Chuck your dirty clothes in, shake violently like a washer would and voila! You have clean clothes left to dry. Again, this is where synthetic fabrics are awesome- they dry quickly!

Leaving Things Behind

I’ve been editing my life lately. Consciously, even stringently.

But not in a self-punishing way. Not in a denying or depriving way.

It started–this life editing, self-editing–because of the circumstances of our last move. We left Puerto Rico last June, planning to go back in December.

Instead, in December, I asked my husband for a separation. We would stay in St. Louis. Family members sheltered us with space and with love. We enrolled our kids in the local schools.

I moved from one day to another in a kind of blur, a haze of unknowing, letting myself realize slowly that going back was not an option.

It never is, but we keep trying.

A month ago, the kids and I moved into an apartment. It is a small, cozy nest, furnished by many gifts and a few secondhand purchases. I keep a keen eye on what comes through the door, what is allowed to take up space here.

I measure carefully.

There is no room for what does not belong.

It’s painful to realize what does not belong to you. To be honest about what is not working. To see for yourself what you cannot hold close, no matter how much you try. It is jarring, shocking, a violation of your trust in the familiar.

The shock gives way to acceptance. You tiptoe forward, you sneak toward it. It’s an acceptance you can’t face, not quite, not yet. You have to come at it sideways.

You drink a glass of water over the sink in the kitchen and push yourself an inch closer.

You wake up and turn on the ceiling fan and take another step.

Closer, closer.

Sometimes you cry on your yoga mat. Stay in child’s pose another minute, sink deeper into your hips, let the floor hold you. Cry like it’s an offering, a payment for your sins, then take a deep breath. Stand up, shaky, and realize you moved another step.

I took the smallest bedroom and filled it up with myself. The curtains have rainbows. The double bed is covered in soft whites, pillows stacked in one corner. I lean back with a journal in the morning, with a book at night. Sometimes all I do is look at the pages and cry.

The closet is full of my clothes. I remove the shirts I don’t wear, the pants I pull on and immediately take off. There is no room here for these discarded parts of myself, these outgrown pieces of identity: the most stringent editing must be the editing of myself.

I cannot be who I was here. There is only space for who I am.

It is powerful to say what you have chosen out loud. It is powerful to say: Yes to this, No to that. It is defining. It is limiting, too. But it is the power to shape the universe, to pull it around you the way you want it to be, to exert yourself upon what is malleable.

There is so much we cannot change. So much that is not at our command, that does not come when we beckon, does not go when we dismiss.

Most of life stands beyond control, beyond understanding. Most of life gives us only one choice: accept, or resist.

So where we have choices, let us take them. Let us be discriminating. Let us edit carefully. These choices are gifts. Perhaps they are tests: not tests of whether we will make the right choice, but whether we will choose at all.

I think it matters: to take responsibility when you can, to let yourself be powerful in the small measures of what you do control, to exert your will upon the world.

To look at the pieces of your life, of yourself, and say: This can stay. That must go.

And then, to live with gratitude in the atmosphere created both by what you have chosen and by what you cannot control. Gratitude walks the line, knits the two parts together.

Outside our apartment there is a row of trees. Between the trees and the wall, there is a tiny balcony. It holds a single rocking chair.

I can sit in that chair, surrounded by the sounds, the air, the shade and sunlight, the moving trees, the noisy birds, the cars and people, the parts of life that immerse me, touch me, and remain always out of my control. And I can go inside. Look at the painting on the wall, the peonies on the table, the movement, the life happening in this defined space: here is what I have chosen, what I have drawn close to me, and here is the space left open by what I have released.
